KALIEL'S PRAIRIE DOGS
We are very curious and like to investigate new things.  But we're cautious too.
This is Tansy. She's a 'scaredy dog'. You can tell that there might be a 'monster' on the floor by the way her tail is all fuzzed out and the way she's looking at it suspiciously.
What are we like as pets?  Well, like most creatures, there are pros and  cons.
First the Cons. 1)  We are WILD ANIMALS.  We do not take kindly to rough treatment and will bite and scratch to defend ourselves. 2)  Our diet must be monitored.  Besides grass, timothy hay , Prairie Pride and Prairie Delight only a few LOW FAT treats are allowed.  A fat prairie dog is a sick dog.    3) We can't be left all alone for long periods of time as we will die from lonliness. 4) We love to CHEW ! Being rodents our front teeth grow constantly and must be worn down by chewing on hard things.  But we will chew EVERYTHING ! This includes funiture, cords (especially electric ones), your clothes, shoes, the window sill, etc. 5) YOU NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 OF US. We are NOT geared to live alone!
The Pros:  1) We are very friendly and loving if treated gently. 2) We are
intelligent
and quickly learn  to even, mostly (if we choose to), come to our name. 3) We also learn what NO ! means (even if we don't like it.).   5)We are day creatures like yourself.   5) We are cheap to feed as our diet consists of mostly grass and grass hays  6) We are VERY CUTE!

I was only about a month old and very tiny when I got to Exclusively Pets in Tacoma, WA.  I was really too young to be an only child.  But, of course, they didn't know that and neither did Mommy Sue and Mommy Fran.   Fortunately they had read "PRAIRIE DOG PETS" by Pat Storer so when I tryed to hibernate (which would have been fatal) they knew what was happening.  Because they had a good relationship with the people at the pet store they knew that the store pet, George, had come in as 'runt' so they took me to them  for help.  I was put in a brooder for 2 weeks.
But Mommy Sue couldn't leave without a prairie dog so they bought a second one.  (This one is Tansy and I'll tell you more about her later.)
Every day they visited they saw me getting better and stronger until finally I was able to come home.
Because I was so young mom says I imprinted on people.  Shows what she knows.I AM a a person! and MUCH better than Tansy, who is JUST a
prairie dog
.
(Most of the time Lily is sweet and loving but she does have a TEMPER!  She will warn by chirping and slapping when she's getting 'mad'. This mostly happens when Tansy or one of the others is trying to steal her treat or attention. Despite being about 2 weeks younger than Tansy Lily is the dominate dog.)

Tansy was about 6 weeks old when Mom got her.  She KNEW that she was a Prairie Dog.  By watching her for just a few minutes you will know that she is very much a wild animal.  She is very cautious and always on the lookout for danger.  She is only handeled on HER terms.  Any PRECIEVED roughness is met with scatches and bites.  Fortunately a 'time out' in a travel cage or 'prairie dog pocket'settles her down.  Tansy loves to spend hours looking out the window watching the cars go by and looking for danger.  She 'barks' very loudly and ducks for cover when she spots a large bird or a dog.
Recently she has decided that cuddling, pets and scratches are a good thing and will ask for attention by grabbing one of mommy Sue's hands and flipping herself over it so she is on her back.  When she's had enough she'll push the hand away and leave.

This is me in Mommy Fran's arms.  I love to cuddle with members of my family.  This is my favorite thing to do besides eating and playing.
LILY
TANSY
HELLO!  My name is Lily. As the ALPHA pdog of this coterie (Prairie dog family) it is my privilige to introduce to you my 'sisters.' and myself.  I will also tell you a little bit about each of us and the life we lead in a human home.
We are Blacktailed Prairie Dogs.  We come (except for Gabriel and Mollie) from a controlled habitat in Texas where a certain number of the 'pups' are removed each year to prevent over crowding which can lead to starvation and disease.
Each April when the most of the pups are old enough to leave home, soapy water is poured down the burroughs to force them to come out.  As they emerge they are hand caught.  Those that bite are released,  Those that don't are shipped to pet stores.  Some as far away as Japan where they fetch a high price.  The rest are sold to people who will love and take good care of them. This practice may soon stop because we are becoming ENDANGERED in the wild due to the goverment's poisoning, the farmers plowing them up and the ranchers shooting them.  As a result a whole ECHO SYSTEM IS BEING LOST.  Creatures such as the BURROWING OWL, THE BLACKFOOTED FERRET and the PRAIRIE RATTLER depend on the Prairie Dog for homes and food.  The goverment has been petitioned to put us on the ENDANGERED SPECIES list.  If this happens you will only be able to buy us from a liscenced breeder if at all.  For now every prairie dog who gets a home is a life saved.  Excess 'dogs' are put to sleep. That was the case untill 2003 .  Then there was a Monkey Pox scare.  So there is an a FDA ban on the sale trade and transport of pds.

When you meet a prairie dog for the first time it can be a little intimidating.  When we greet each other we open our mouths to click teeth.  So we  do that when greeting people too.  What we are saying is "Hi!  I'm friendly.  If you're not I have big teeth and know how to use them!"
If you have questions about my girls or prairie dogs as pets..........
